We All Fall Down

Just a quick iPhone photo, from yesterday's lunch time.   just 100 yards or so from where Lemay Ferry crosses the Meremec River, in Arnold, MO.  Processed using Topaz Impressions plug in, with sepia tone added in PhotoShop elements.

I was going for a feel that could be 100 years ago.

You're No Good

So...  I was poking around on youtube last night.  I ended up browsing Sara Niemietz's stuff, because...  well, because I like her stuff. (Check out her "Travel Light" CD).  Anyway, I saw that she's done a version of Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good"*.

Well, I had to give it a listen.  And now I'll recommend it to you:

You’re No Good (Linda Ronstadt) - Sara Niemietz, W.G. Snuffy Walden, Loren Gold

Really solid version, I dig it.  That said, I'm not sure the Linda Ronstadt version can be topped.  So after listening to Sara N, I had to check out Linda R.  And I found (actually re-found) an outstanding version from the old TV show Midnight Special.  With a crazed Skunk Baxter adding percussion, even.  Just ignore the horrible Jose Feliciano intro...

Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good

They're both great....

* You're No Good was written by Clint Ballard, Jr. and first hit the charts in 1963.  Linda Ronstadt's version (1975) went to #1 on the US Charts.

Ice and Eagles

After Saturday's eagle excursion, and after most of a laxy Sunday afternoon, I decided to run over to Chain of Rocks and see what I could see.  It was a pretty grey and dull day, but you never know.

I did see one eagle, far off on the trees.  I was trying to make my way closer, when another flew up to it, and after some flapping at each other, the bother heaed south (away from me).  So no photos.  But still a cool sight.

Meanwhile, the water was pretty low at chain of rocks, and there were some rather cool ice formations.  Here's a couple of photos:

Eagle Watching 20190126

The wife and I took a Saturday drive yesterday, we went out in search of eagles.  Up the River Road to Pere Marquette area, then back down with a side trip to Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton, MO.  We had a nice drive, but all the way up, no eagles. That's OK, you take what life gives you.

Some decent photo ops from the drive, and at Pere Marquette:

Shortly after passing the Brussels Ferry, looking through the trees, I glimpsed an eagle riding the ice out on the Illinois River.  There was a pull-out almost immediately, so we were able to get a good view.  We saw an adult and a juvenile (no white head) out on the ice, and two more hanging out in a tree across the river.  Too far for photos, but a nice view of the river:

Continuing south, not too far below Grafton, while passing through a bit of a snow squall, we saw a big eagle out on the ice in the Mississippi River.  I don't have a long-zoom for my new camera, but was able to catch the essence of the eagle.  This is stopped along the Great River Road:

We had fun wandering around Riverlands, checked out a few of the "backroads" we hadn't explored before.  Lots of birds, but not eagles.  As we pulled into the parking lot below the dam, one flew directly overhead.  Most cool, but I didn't have a camera at the ready.  We saw a couple more in the trees below the dam, maybe 750 yards.  Way too far for camera, on the edge of what we could see with the binoculars.

Overall, a great way to spend (most of) a day.  Looking online, it seems there were more out later in the day, after we had headed home.  Next time!

Chessie's Girl...

Pardon the bad pun reference to the best forgotten 1981 Rick Springfield song.  You know it is locked into your head now.  I know it is in mine. If not, try this link to seal the deal.

This is an oldie, from back in August 2018, that managed to fall through the cracks f my mind.  I actually have a lot of unprocessed images from that trip, maybe you'll see some more...

Taken in Staunton VA, seen while looking for a quilt shop w/ the wife.  We had a nice lunch rather nearby.

Adore

I happened to drive though Benld, IL yesterday, and noticed this faded entryway.  After living in SW Illinois for almost 30 years, this is the first time I've every happened to drive through Benld...

So I guess I can check that one off the list!

Eeeny Meeny Miniy Mo....

Out for a lunchtime walk, at Cliff Cave State Park.  Cold and windy, but I braved it long enough for a couple of images.  With the best camera I had with me, the iPhone (8).

I can't decide which I like better...  and opinion has flipped a couple of times.  Want to vote in the comments?

ACC-100 - TRUMPED! - Now. Now! Not Tomorrow!

Over at 365project, one of the ongoing challenges is to create mock album covers.  You select random band names and album covers, and then make an album cover.  (more details here).  It probably shouldn't surprise anyone that I especially dig this one, and play frequently.

Anyway, here's my current entry, for the 100th edition of the game:

My (randomly selected) band name was "Trumped!", and my album title was Now, Now! Not Tomorrow.    And before anybody gets all political?  Well, please don't.  Whichever side of the fence you're on.Thanks.

I often use old photos as the starting point for this game, and for this round I reached all the way back to October 2005.  And to create a very graphic (and non literal) image.  It went through several iterations to get to this, and I've pondered a few other since.  But overall, I'm satisfied.  Although I worry that folk will be unable to ignore the political implication of the band name....   It is kind of a shame, huh?

Anyway, here's the original photo...

A Good Crop - 2015

As I noted in my recent post, I've done a "Good Crop" post every year since 2012...  except 2015.

After some thought, I decided it was worth the time to look back and create a Top 12 for 2015, even 3 years late.  So here it is:

- - - - - -

Ansel Adams is credited with saying "Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop". In that spirit, I've tried to pick my 12 favorite photos each year, and post them here.  (I don't know that anything I've done would qualify as "significant, so we'll stick with favorite)...  Now, given that I'm looking back 3 years, OI can't guarantee this would be the exact 12 photos I'd've faved at the time, but I suspect it is close.  And Close enough.

So here you go, my crop for 2015.  I've arranged them chronologically, no "ranking" implied.  If you have a favorite (or two), let me know in the comments!  Click though to see larger versions over at my 365project site.

January 1969 Album Charts

January 1969, 50 years ago!  Wow.
I've been listening to my "Top 40 Hots of 1969" playlist the last couple of days, and marvelling at what a good year it was musically.  So, I decided to look at the album charts, and see what was popular during this month (January) of 1969.

Looking at the average chart position over the 4 Saturdays of the month, here's the top 20 albums:

  • The Beatles [White Album]  -  The Beatles - 1.0
  • Wichita Lineman  -  Glen Campbell - 3.8 (peaked at #2)
  • Fool On The Hill  -  Sergio Mendes - 3.8 (peaked at #3)
  • Diana Ross and The Supremes Join The Temptations  -  Diana Ross and The Supremes - 4.0
  • The Second  -  Steppenwolf - 6.8 (peaked at #3)
  • Beggars Banquet  -  The Rolling Stones - 6.8 (peaked at #5)
  • Cheap Thrills  -  Big Brother And The Holding Company - 7.0
  • Wildflowers  -  Judy Collins - 8.5
  • In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida  -  Iron Butterfly - 9.5
  • Time Peace/The Rascals' Greatest Hits  -  The Rascals - 10.3
  • Electric Ladyland  -  The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 11.0
  • Funny Girl (Soundtrack)  -  Barbra Streisand - 13.5
  • Feliciano!  -  Jose Feliciano - 13.8
  • Gentle On My Mind  -  Glen Campbell - 14.3
  • Love Child  -  The Supremes - 15.3
  • Aretha In Paris  -  Aretha Franklin - 16.0
  • TCB  -  Diana Ross & The Supremes - 17.0
  • Wheels Of Fire  -  Cream - 18.5
  • Traffic  -  Traffic - 20.5
  • 200 M.P.H.  -  Bill Cosby - 21.5

Several intereing things to notice.  First, The Beatles dominated, holding #1 for all 4 weeks.  It reached the top on the last chart of 1968, and would sit at #9 for a total of 9 weeks.  And not drop out of the Top 10 until April.

Next is the presence of 3 different Supremes records in the Too 20 of the month.  They had a total of 5 albums in the Top 100 during the month.  That's pretty darn impressive!

Glen Campbell only managed 2 albums in the Top 20, but also had 6 albums in the Top 100. Also impressive!

There were 9 Soundtrack albums in the Top 100, including Funny Girl (12), The Graduate (25), Doctor Zhivago (52), The Sound Of Music (53), 2001: A Space Odyssey (72), Camelot (77), Wild In The Streets (90), Star! (98) and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (99).  That's almost 10% of the Top 100.  [Note, the nimbers represent the peak for the month, not overall)

The only odd inclusion for me is Sergio Mendes.  I wasn't familiar with him, and listening to the album on Spotify (as I type), it's pretty decent, but decidedly  Jazz / Easy Listening.   It does inckude two hits:  a cover of Beatles' Fool On The Hill (#6) and a cover of Simon and Garfunkels' Scarborough Fair (#16).  Pleasant enough, but hard to imagine the album at #3.
