From The Archives - Beauty In The River

A real oldie.  This is early morning on the upper Potomac River, somewhere upstream of Little Orleans, MD.  I beleive this was the summer of 1982...  Maybe 1983.  This photo was taken from a canoe, just after pushing off from the bank.  Back in the days of film.

The post title is from the Ozark Mountain Daredevils song:

There's a beauty in the river, there's a beauty in the stream
There's a beauty in the forest at night, when the lonely nightbird screams

And there's so much time for singin', and so much time for words
There's so much time to listen, and so much time to be heard

There's a brighter day 'round the corner, there's a crown behind the hill
There's a city of light on that foggy mountain top where the wind is never still

And there's so much time in livin', and so much time to die
There's so much time for laughing, and so much time to cry

We must all stand in the water, we must find it when we roam
it don't matter what is said, we can wake up from the dead
And roll away the stone, we can roll away the stone.

There's a truth in the eyes of my woman, that no mortal ever knew
She lights my way like the coming of the day, when the sun shines on the dew.

And there's so much time for singin', and so much time for words
There's so much time to listen, and so much time to be heard

We must all stand in the water, we must find it when we roam
it don't matter what is said, we can wake up from the dead
And roll away the stone, we can roll away the stone.

(repeat chorus)

Photo Fail

I took this image  a week or so ago, during lunch time.  At Pleasant Ridge Park.

And this image totally doesn't come close to what I wanted.  Fail, fail, fail.
sigh.

From The Archives - Columbine

Another one from DEEP in the archives.  The digital file dates back to April 2002, but this was scanned from a print.  The actual image is probably a 5-6 years older.  Before the Colorado shooting that changed the connotation of the name.

Remember When - Not My Type!

When's the last time you used a TYPEWRITER?
Yep, that's me.  Spring of freshman year of college.  You can probably tell I was a hunt-and-peck typist...  slow slow slow.

Redbud - With Orton Effect

So it was a drizzly grey day today, but I still headed over to Pleasant Ridge Park at lunch.  I tried a short walk in the wood, but that only inspired the rain to intensify, leading to a pathetic scamble back to the car.  Consequently,  I had to settle for a single snapshot, taken from the car window.

Well, looking at it this evening, it just wasn't working for me.  Then I remembered a recent post over at the My Viewfinder blog, a revisiting of the Orton Effect.  So I played around with it, came up with something that I don't hate....  That's something!  Larger version here.  I probably should've read the tutorial, instead of working from memory.....

From The Archives - Silver Lake #001

I'm pretty sure this was one of the first photos I posted to the web.  Way back pre-blog, in the AOL-Homepage days.  June 2003, the early days of digital.  This is Silver Lake Park, Highland Illinois, site of many of my images in the mid 2000's.

From The Archives - Duke University, Gothic Spires

From May 2003.  On a business trip to Raleigh NC, I had some spre time and ran over to Duke.  Just a quick visit to the old Alma Mater.  It was a cool grey day, misty rain, as I recall.  This is looking from archways beside the Duke Chapel. across to the Div School

Just a little something to get in the mood for the NCAA Basketball Tournement, where Duke is seeded #2 in the South.  they'll play Lehigh Friday night.....

From The Archives - Music In Memphis

This is from several years ago, probably early 2002.  No clue what the name of the band is (was), but I expect they were playing Elvis Presley songs....

Maple Leaf Lake - More

Another shot from the fun little park I discovered along I-70, about 40 miles east of KC.  There was a large area of these flooded trees.  Not from high water, we've had a very dry winter.  This is just from where they created the lake, I suppose.

Maple Leaf Lake

So, I was driving from Kansas City to St. Louis yesterday, and made a short stop at Maple Leaf Lake.  No specific reason, I saw the "brown sign" and decided for a break.  Interesting (but small) place.  It was a very blustery day, but in the 70's.  Not too bad, but very flat-lighting.  I still managed a few images.
More photos here,

Slice Of Life #4074 - Kansas Speedway

A view out my Hotel window this morning, from my quick business trip to Kansas City.  Sadly, my trip had nothing to do with the track.

From The Archives - Old Signs

I've always really liked this image, but it's one that bever seemed to get much attention wback when I was postign at BetterPhoto.com, or other such sites.  Ah well, just goes to show.  This wall was torn down a few months ago, the imge is all that remains....

Slice Of Life #4067

I've got nothing to say about this one......

From The Archives - C&O Canal

Another real oldie, early spring of 1977, IIRC.  One of my first backpacking trips, to C&O canal, not far from Hagerstown Maryland.  This was taken on slide film with my handy (but long gone) Canon TX.  This version of the image has some significant effects added, I was looking for a "painterly" feel when I did it.

I made this my computer wallpaper this week, but the original version.

Slice Of Life #4051 - Up To No Good?

On President's Day, I was having lunch at St. Ellen Park, wandering around, taking a few photos.  It was cold-ish, breezy, not a very pleasant day.  Anyway, as I was walking back to my car, a car pulled in beside me with a trio of kids.  I'd guess high-school age, at least one of them old enough to drive.  Two young men and a young lady.  As I was leaving, they were wandering off to one of the little hidden coves.  A cold, muddy little spot, where I had just come from.

I know it's none of my business, but the father in me kept wondering what they were up to.
