Freebird, Falling From The Sky, Brings A Bitter End To Another Southern Man…
October 20, 1977, twenty eight years ago today. A chartered airplane carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in dense woods in Mississippi, killing leader Ronnie Van Zant, Guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, along with the pilot and co-pilot. The rest of the band suffered serious injuries. While the band has soldiered on through today, it’s never really come close to the peak of the RVZ era. the title is from one of several tribute songs, "Grey Ghost" by Henry Paul Band.
