Throwback Thursday #42033 - BP Revisited

From sometime in 2002 through the early 2008, I was pretty active at BetterPhoto.com.   It was a fun site, it inspired my "rejuvination" in photography, and I met a lot of cool people.  But, for me at least, it kind of ran its course.  Now, in the spirit of throwback, I figured to post some of my favorite images from those days.

A real oldie, originally shot back in summer of 1981.

Taken in October 2004 at Spokane River Park, not too far south of Spokane WA.  Maybe 0.5 miles downstream from here.  I used to get to Spokane every year for a business conference.  I could usually mangae a couple hours at some point during the week for an excursion.  I'm sure I posted this one a couple of times, hoping to get recognized.  This one's still out there at BP, even though it didn't get any formal recognition...

This is a particular favorite of mine, but never received any recognition at BP.

I Saw The Light...

A little bit of randomness, and some In camera" effects.  This lighted cross sits in a front yard I pass on my daily commute. I decided to take a snap as I passed this evening, not too long after sunset.  Only post-processing is a crop and levels.

I kind of like it...

365project - Week 3 (ish)

Well, as of yesterday, I'm 19 days into my challenge:  One picture a day for 365 days.  I didn't start on the 1st, so I'm out of sync with the calendar.  Deal with it....

I haven't been posting all my images here, so I thought I'd do a weekly rundown.  So here's last week, click on the titles to see the post.

I'm rather pleased with these, overall.  I feel like I'm ALMOST getting into a groove.

Lone Tree

It's been a few days (5, actually) since I last posted new material here, sorry about that.  But I've posted a few over at Happenstance, and daily at 365project.  This is a little something I snapped on a lunchtime excursion yesterday.  Out in the farmland a bit further east of St. Louis.  Not a very pretty day, but this wouldn't be the same if it was bright and sunny.

Throwback Thursday #42026 - BP Revisited

From sometime in 2002 through the early 2008, I was pretty active at BetterPhoto.com.   It was a fun site, it inspired my "rejuvination" in photography, and I met a lot of cool people.  But, for me at least, it kind of ran its course.  Now, in the spirit of throwback, I figured to post some of my favorite images from those days.

A real oldie, originally shot back in summer of 1981.

This is (or was) Duke Homestead, in Durham, NC.  Taken in my college days when I did some work for the university newspaper.  I had been sent to shoot a tobacco spitting contest.  Funny, no photos remain from that.  Meanwhile, I posted this to BP several times, in a couple of versions.  Hoping it would get noticed, but it never did. I'm probably seeing it through "father's eyes"...   I still love the tones on this, though the composition could've probably been improved.  This is from my old Canon TX SLR, way before digital.

Love Gets You Twisted

Close up of barbed wire, with an intertwined vine.  Just a little something I noticed during yesterday's visit to Schon Park.  The post title is a semi-random reference to the Graham Parker song, from the Squeezing Out Sparks album.

365project - Week 2 (ish)

Well, I've made it 12 days into my challenge:  One picture a day for 365 days.  I didn't start on the 1st, so I'm out of sync with the calendar.  Deal with it....

I haven't been posting all my images here, so I thought I'd do a weekly rundown.  So here's last week, click on the titles to see the post.

So, I don't hate all of these, and rather like a few.  And it is a challenging time of year.  But, I've gotta get my compact-digital replaced.  Four of these 7 are iPhone images, and 2 are my DSLR (the other is a borrowed Prosumer).  If you want to guess which is which, click through on the image for the specifics.

January 1965 In Music

Regular readers know that, for the past year or so, I've been posting about music happenings from 40 years previous (for the math challenged, last year focused on 1974, by month).

Well, I've decided to expand the effort, see how it goes.  So, looking at 50 years ago, here's the first installment of 1965 in music.  Now, I was in nursery school / kindergarden in 1965, so my personal memories are a bit vague.  BUT, my music interest (and collection) does reach that far back.

Starting with notable albums released in January 1965:
And topping the charts in January 1965:
I don't own any of the albums noted above, but I do have the Zombies' hits.  Amd I do have all of the #1 singles.

Do Geese See God?

Made a short photo excursion to Schon Park this morning, think I managed a few workable images.  We;ll start with this one, a trio of geese leaving.  I think they were offended at my approach.I'm not a big goose fan, but I rather like how this one turned out, with each goose's wings in a different position...

The title is a just a silly palindrome, which happens to appear in the Weird Al Yankovic song Bob, which happened to be on the iPod on my drive home.  And that's how these things happen...

Throwback Thursday #42019 - BP Revisited

From sometime in 2002 through the early 2008, I was pretty active at BetterPhoto.com.   It was a fun site, it inspired my "rejuvination" in photography, and I met a lot of cool people.  But, for me at least, it kind of ran its course.  Now, in the spirit of throwback, I figured to post some of my favorite images from those days.

originally shot in early 2005, but posted to BP in December of that year:

Details of my Daughter's French Horn.   I'm still pretty proud of this image, certainlt qualifies as a favorite.  Plus it won a second place at BP

This was taken with my Nikon D-70 DSLR.  Wonderful camera, I still miss it...

Herewith: Heart Hits

So, over the weekend I was pondering what to pick up with the iTunes card I received at Christmas.  One option would be to add some of the later songs from the band "Heart".  I have most of their 70's stuff, but only a couple of their 80's (and later) songs.

So, I spent some time with the internet, made a list, and then a playlist of Heart's Top 40 hits. Now I can live with it for a little bit, and decide which songs I want.  The list is on Spotify, check it out!

  • Crazy On You - 1976  #35
  • Magic Man - 1976   # 9
  • Barracuda - 1977   #11
  • Heartless - 1978   #24
  • Straight On - 1978   #15
  • Dog And Butterfly - 1979   #34

  • Never - 1985   # 4

8/365 - The Samuel Chamberlain Band - I'm A Scientist

Regulars know that I've done a couple of "mock" album covers in the past.  And that I recently started a "photo-a-day" project.  Well, today the two have combined, as I found an album-cover-challenge on the site.  This version has you use a random wikipedia site for the Group Name, and a random quite for the Album Title.

In this case, Wikipedia gave me "Samuel Chamberlain", I added "The" and "Band"..   And The Quotations Page gave me "...I'm A Scientist'"...  The photo is an abstract, taken through my frosted car windo this morning.  With a helthy dose of effects.

So, what kind of music would this be?  My first thought was something Jazz-Fusion.  But maybe play off the Scientist angle (She Blinded Me With Science?)...  Or go the "prog" route (The Revealing Science Of God?)...?

7/365 - Headed Up

Today's entry for my 365project.  Lunchtime at Pleasant Ridge Park:

I was feeling like I had taken a similar photo while back, but in spring/summertime, when it wasn't bare.  But I didn't see anything in a quick can of my archives.  Maybe I just MEANT to...

6/365 - January Rain

Low 30's and rain, a rather gross Sunday.  Weather report says it'll turn to freezing rain at some point.   I took a few shots in the back yard, looking for something for my 365project.  The one above is the one I decided on.  But it was a close decision between that one and this one:

I like the bokeh in both...  The top one has a bit more color, and you can perceive the rain...But I rather like the more abstract nature of the lower one....  So did I make the right call?  or wrong?  Lesser of two evils?  Or Dumb and Dumber?
