The Best Years Of Rock

What was the best time for rock music?

Well, I’m sure that there’s a hundred (or more) answers, depending on how you define “best”.  I’d tend to say the span from the late 60’s through the early 70’s,..  But, speaking as an engineer, what’s a more “technical” answer?

Let’s look at the Rolling Stone list of 500 greatest albums.  The original, 2003, edition.  Now look at a sliding window of time, and count the number of recognized albums.....  I chose a 7 year window, because that gives a pretty clear answer:

The blue dots are the number of albums from each year.  The green line is the 7 year average, looking at the 7 years up to the noted year.

You can see a very dramatic peak in 1973.  In other words, the 7 year window from 1967 through 1973.  It's equally clear if you look at the individual years.  Each year from 1967 through 1973 is solidly above all of the other years:

This time window provided 189 of the Top 500 albums, 37.8% of the list. I won't list all of them in this post (but look for a post per year over the next few weeks).  Meanwhile, here's the top ranked album for each of the years:

  • 1967  -  Beatles – Sargent Pepper’s …    - #1
  • 1968  -  Beatles – White Album     - #10
  • 1969  -  Beatles – Abbey Road    - - #14
  • 1970  -  John Lennon – Plastic Ono Band    -  # 23
  • 1971  -  Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On    - #6
  • 1972  -  Rolling Stones – Exile On Main Street    - #7
  • 1973  -  Stevie Wonder – Innervisions     - #24

So, what do YOU say?  What time frame to you think was the best?  And what's your criteria?

Parthenon, Nashville Style

From Nashville Parks & Rec. web page:

"The Parthenon stands proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville's premier urban park. The re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals."

We were in Nashville last week, on a College visit (Vanderbilt), and stayed at the Holiday Inn just off campus.  Our 12th floor balcony overlooked Centennial Park, as seen in the top photo.  The lower shot is from the sidewalk along West End Ave.  Taken just before 11pm, as we walked around after a bit of drama with a fire alarm (hint:  if you burn microwave popcorn in your hotel room, don't put the smoking bag in the hall...  try the balcony).

One of these days I'd like to visit the Parthenon properly, not just from a distance.  Both the replica, and the original, for that matter...

Oh yeah:....  the visit to Vanderbilt was cool, very nice campus.  More data for my son to crunch.

How Many More?

Just a bit of graffiti, along the Heritage Bike Trail...  This was one of my shots for this week's world wide minute, but not the one I used for that...

The text is not clipped, thoe three words were all that was there.  Leaving us all to wonder, how many more what?  Of course, ever the music geek, it led me right into Led Zeppelin's "How Many More Times"....

World Wide Minute - 3/15/2017

So there's this thing...  World Wide Minute.  On 3/15/2017, ant 5:47pm local time, you take a photo.  And post it to their facebook group.  I think this is the 4th year, and I've participated in the last 3 (after discovering it at 365project)

Kind of interesting, each photo has been black and white...

Worldwide Minute 2015

I don't think any of these is exactly stunning, but given that I'm usually on my evening communte at 5:47pm, I think that's just how it will be.
