RIP Dusty Hill

Dusty Hill, bass player for ZZ Top passed away today (07/28/2021).  Hill was with ZZ Top for 50 years, since their first album in 1971.

The first ZZ Top album I owned was 1975's Fandango, closely followed by the previous release "Tres Hombres".  Two classic mid-70s albums.

Rest In Peace Dusty Hill...

Why don’t you quit leaving me alone

Or should I say "Leafing me alone"?   Just a bit of randomness that caught my eye.

“Why don’t you quit leaving me alone” - Belmont Tench (also recorded by Roseanne Cash).

Road Trip

So, I've been away for a few days, that's my current excuse for lack of posting.  Of course, I haven't been posting much over the pasty couple months, this past week is both related, and not related.

Been having some family issues on the wife's side, maybe getting towards settling down.  And started a new job not too long ago.  Any, we all know about excuses....

Anyway, here's my recent trvel:

A bit over 2600 miles in a week.  The first leg from STL to ATL was actually by air.  Then the drive from ATL to Cleveland area, and back.  Finish off with a drive from ATL back to STL area.  Lots of windshield time.  We did the Atlanta area to Cleveland are in a single stretch, which took 13 hours.  We did split the return to Atlanta (stopping in Lexington, KY).  And we were late leaving Atlanta for St. Louis area, so we split that trip, too (Manchester, TN).

I didn't even take my camera, because I knoew I wouldn't have any extra tim e to wander.  But I did manage a few phone photos.  I'll try and post over the next couple of days, or you can check them out on my instagram.

Hopefully I can get this ramped back up, thanks for your patience.

July 1971

Here's for the next in my ongoing series of reviewing the Top 40 songs from 50 years ago.  I've been doing this version of the review for over a year now, plan to continue indefinitely.

So what was July 1971 like?

There were 5 weeks of July'71, and there were 58 songs that spent time in the Top 40. As usual, lots of great stuff.  1971 was a pretty outstanding year!

Three songs topped the charts over July's 5 weeks:  Carole King's "It's Too Late" held #1 for the last 3 weeks, finishing out a 5 week stay at the top.  "Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee) took #1 for a single week, and "Don't Pull Your Love" by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds finished the month at the top spot.

Instagram, June Look-Back

So, June was a pretty slow month, photo wise.  As was May.  Sorry about that, a lot of stuff going on.  I can't promise, but I do plan to do more going forward.

Anyway, now that were a week into July, I decided to look back at Instagram, and see what my Top 5 (popular) images were.  Now, I only had 21 posts to my main account:  lsqrd42 (https://www.instagram.com/lsqrd42/?hl=en).  Pretty mediocre.  And I think my total likes + comments were impacted by the spotty posting.  Regardless, here's the Top 5, in chronological order (oldest to newest):

It's interesting that 4 of these 5 were shot on my Fujifilm X series cameras, only one was taken with my phone.  I tend to stress the iPhone on Instagram, and 12 of 21 posts in June were from the iPhone, so the results this month were disproportionally skewed to the "real" camera.  What can it mean?

Meanwhile, quiltshopsphotoops (https://www.instagram.com/quiltshopsphotoops/?hl=en) was really dead i June, only 3 posts.  That forum was especially hard hit by the intrusive life of the past couple of months.  I do hope to ramp that one back up, if we can get back to day tripping.

Thanks for supporting my postings, I do appreciate it!

Mulberry Grove

Mulberry Grove is about 60 miles from St. Louis, just off I-70. This storefront has certainly seen better days...

Mid-day at the Watershed

One general rule of thumb is to avoid mid day for photography.  Hash lighting, too much contrast, etc.  But yesterday found me at Watershed Nature Center just before noon.  Since I was walking anyway, I brought my cameras.  And I managed a few photos I'm satisfied with. Call me a rule-breaker!

Nice excursion to Watershed Nature Center yesterday...  Here's a few photos, click for larger size.
