Good Times, Bad Times - July 2015

Almost finished with the ongoing series:

The good part of a 365Project is that it keeps photography in the front of the mind, and leads to pushing boundaries.  The bad side is that sometimes you post less that perfect images, just to keep up...  SO:  I decided to take the "favorites from the month" concept, and include "unfavorites from the month".

For my recently completed year, we've looked at JanuaryFebruary, March, April , MayJune, August, October (good and bad), November and December.

       Today we'll look at August:

Most Of Us Are Sad - R.I.P. Glen Frey

I just saw a news report that Glen Frey, co-founder and guitar player for the Eagles has died.

As noted on wikipedia: With five number-one singles, six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, and six number one albums, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, two of their albums, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) and Hotel California, were ranked among the 20 best-selling albums in the United States according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Hotel California is ranked 37th in Rolling Stone 's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and the band was ranked number 75 on the magazine's 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

I was a teenager in the 70's, and the Eagles were part of the soundtrack of my youth. Guess it's time to reprogram the iPod from Bowie to Eagles....

The title is from a lesser known Eagles song, written by Glen Frey.  From their first album (my favorite Eagles album).

One Track Mind - Flashback Friday

This was one of my posts from this week in 2015.  Originally for/from my 365project.  This is a spot not far from my office, this rail line eventually passes behind our office.  This line was closed in August 2015.  They cut the line in Collinsville, and all if the at grade crossings (like this one) have "Line Out Of Service" signs added.

Title was inspired by the Wet Willie song, from their 1978 album Manorisms...

This Old House

I was driving around at lunch yesterday, looking for something fun to photogaph.  I found this....

Just a bit east of New Baden, IL, off of Rt. 161.

Ram Jam....

And now for something completely different; a moment of sports:

The NFL announced last night the the St. Louis Rams will be moving to Los Angeles.  Perhaps the least surprising news of 2016 (so far), but disappointing nonetheless.  At least disappointing to those of us living in the St. Louis area....

Twenty years ago, the Rams moved from LA to St. Louis.  Their reasons then were a crappy stadium, and poor attendance.   Their reasons for heading back?  Well, it boils down to to a crappy stadium, and poor attendance. Of course, in both cases, the "product" had been pretty horrible for several years....   (the St. Louis Rams have lost 68% of their games over the past decade, averaging almost 11 losses per season).   Reasons, excuses, whatever.   Bottom line:  The league badly wants a team in LA, ad The Rams owner wants them to be that team.  Anything else was just talk. I just wish Stan Kronke had been straightforward with the people in St. Louis, instead of trying to blame the fans of St. Louis.  It's about money and prestige, and there's more of both out west.

On the plus side, I'll have a better chance of seeing the Steelers on any given Sunday.  Or at least a decent NFL game....

Happy New Year!

Yeah, I know I'm late.  I hope you'll understand and forgive.
 ----
I posted this image yesterday over at 365Project (where I've just started my 2nd year!).  I ttitled it "A Horse With No Name"....  I actually have no idea if this horse has a name. Would a random horse be expected to have a name? Pardon my cluelessness....  Regardless, I was driving yesterday, admiring that barn, when the horse abled out. By the time I pulled over, and grabbed the camera, it was further away from the barn that I would've preferred. But I didn't see any way to have him (her?) go back and start over...

Confluence

Rather grey day in the midwest, but warm. I had a little time and ended up at the Columbia River Conservation Area.

This is the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, two of the key waterways in the USA.Taken from the Observation Platform at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area.the little point of land in the distance is the break. Closer is the Missouri, further away is the Mississippi. Downstream, it's just the Mississippi.

I have a lot more photos to look through, hopefully there are some good ones....  stay tuned!

St. Louis Arch from Horseshoe Lake State Park

The arch is not quite 8 miles(straight line) SW of this edge of Horseshoe Lake, Granite City, IL. Horseshoe Lake is an oxbow lake, a leftover from a long lost meander of the Mississippi River.

Just a little wandering at lunchtime today...

Time Lapse Sunset, Looking South-East

Sometimes the coolest sunsets are seen looking AWAY from the sun...  this is looking South East...

Just a little something shot w/ my iPhone....

Looking Back

So... yesterday, driving to work....  really cool ice crystals on the side view miror.  As I drove I kept thinking:  "I should take a picture of that".   About 1/2 to work, I decided to go for it.  I pulled into a parking lot, aligned the car for the right light, grabbed my camera and opened the window.

At which point the warm air the the car IMMEDIATELY melted the really cool ice crystals.

There's a lesson in there somewhere....
