Ex Monkee Mike Nesmith had his only pop Top 40 with "Joanne". Which made it's Top 40 debut today (9/5) in 1970, and which peaked at 21. Nesmith also wrote songs like "Different Drum" (popularized by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys), and had a pretty successful run on the country side of things... before virtually inventing music television.
