One Album A Day - 001

Back in Late October I discovered a site that will feed you an album every day, working (randomly) through the classic book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.  I decided to give it a try, and maybe find some good music that would be new to me.  After each day, you make a 1-5 rating, and can provide a review.

Well, I'm 72 albums in, and it has been fun.  I decided to add some posts here summarizing my listens.  Since I'm already 10+ weeks in, I'll do batches.  I don't see doing daily posts, probably weekly (one I catch up).  So here you go, hope you enjoy:

SUMMARY

#  Date            Year Album - Artist   - My Rating - Global Rating

1  1969 At San Quentin - Johnny Cash - 3 - 3.81

2  1978 C'est Chic - CHIC - 3 - 3.37

3  1993 Debut - Björk - 2 - 3.40

4  1967 The Doors - The Doors - 5 - 3.97

5  1999 S&M - Metallica - 2 - 3.30

6  11971 At Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers Band - 4 - 3.40

67 1963 A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector - Various Artists - 3 - 3.28

Note that #67 is out of order, but it was delivered to everyone on Christmas Day.  I decided to bump it up since we're still in the holidyas

And the Reviews:

67- A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector - Various Artists - 3

This is certainly a niche record, a "once a year" kind of thing. That's ok, of course, and these are solid versions of Christmas classics. It's bathed in that Phil Spector Wall-Of-Sound (TM), which works in this early 60's framing. Members of the Wrecking Crew ensure the music is perfect.

The Ronettes' version of Sleigh Bell is especially good. All of it is good, and several of the arrangements have become "standard". But, it's just not a record with broad appeal. I' don't own this one, and won't be adding it to my collection.  3/5

6- At Fillmore EastThe Allman Brothers Band4

An iconic album, deserved. This captures the spirit of Allman Brothers Band, arguably at their peak. Widely considered one of the best live albums in rock. They’re the original Southern Rock band, but don’t have the same foot-stomping, honky tonking feel that a lot of most of the bands that followed. ABB has more of a bluesy, jamming musical style, a bit “smoother”. But they can certainly rock out, too. If there’s a downside, it’s that the extended jams can go on, evidenced by Whipping Post which takes the 5 minute studio version and stretches it out to 22+ minutes. Or Elizabeth Reed which doubles from its studio version to almost 13 minutes. This is 7 songs in 76 minutes, it is not concise. Still, one of the essential albums of 70’s rock. 4/5

5- S&M - Metallica - 2

I’ve never been much of a Metallica fan, but tried to go into this with an open mind. But over 1hr into this 133 minute album, I’m wondering if I can slog through to the end. It doesn’t suck, it just that too much of it is essentially the same to me, kind of a a constant beating drone. Not enough melody, lots of head banging wall of sound. I like the symphonic part, but that loses its novelty pretty quickly. “Hero for the Day” is a nice change of pace, and the symphony is really good on that one. Likewise with “Devil’s Dance”, with it’s “Kashmir” inspired strings. But I had to wade through over 45 minutes of wall-of-sound to get to those. It doesn’t help that I’ve never liked James Hetfield’s vocals, just not my “thing”. I can see why lots of people love Metallica, but I’m not one of them. I guess that summarizes the whole experience. I’ll finish disc 1, and give myself a break before disc 2. Which isn’t much of an endorsement. 2/5

4- The Doors - The Doors - 5

One of the best debut albums ever, one of the best albums of the late 60’s. One of the best keyboard based rock albums. From the opening of “Break On Through” to the last strains of “The End”, this album doesn’t let up. I’ve had this on vinyl since the 70s, and on CD since it was available. HIGHLY recommended, 5/5

3- Debut - Björk - 2

This album was completely new to me. By mid 1993 I was pretty much out of the "popular" music scene. I think I've heard the name, but don't think I've ever heard any of Bjork's music. So I went into this with an open mind and a blank slate. I thought the first couple of songs were pretty good. Sort of an ambient, ethereal feel. But with each passing song it held y interest less and less. Just not really my "thing". 2/5

2- C'est Chic - CHIC - 3

"Le Freak" is one of the huge songs of the disco era, a real high-point of the genre. Also the only song from this album I had heard (and have). The whole album is very solid and stays in it's lane (disco / Funk), but does it well.

Further, it sounds great (I'm listening to the 2018 remaster via Spotify). Bernard Edwards' bass is strong in the mix and quite enjoyable. All said, a good representative of the genre; C'est Chic was Billboard's 1979 R&B Album of the Year. All good, but not a genre I'm all that excited about. A very solid 3/5.

1- At San Quentin - Johnny Cash - 3

More interesting as a “moment” than a musical collection. It seems like Cash made a living playing prisons, and this is one of those shows. The interactions with the inmates are as interesting as the songs, but there’s an awful lot of random talk that doesn’t add anything. Even still this is only 34 minutes, and includes playing the song “San Quentin” twice. And an abbreviated version of “Folsom Prison Blues”. It leaves me wishing for more meat. Perhaps a bit more editing of the talking would’ve allowed some additional material. Overall OK, 3 of 5. I won’t be adding it to my collection. 3/5

BP-POTD - Upper Falls

So, last week I received a Picture-Of-The_Day recognition from BetterPhoto.com.  Pretty cool, I've only gotten a couple of those through the years.  This is a photo from September, when our travels took us to upstate New York.  This is the upper falls at Letchworth State Park, western NY.

Black Friday - No Shopping

I don't know if Black Friday is as big a deal as it used to be, with the rise of internet shopping and the expansion from a day to a week, etc.  But I do know that I've tried to avoid shopping on the day after Thanksgiving since my cousins dragged my brother and I to their local mall in 1970 and overwhelmed me.

Anyway, last Thursday, I went hiking with my daughters, their spouses and the 2 grandkids.  We went to Valley View Glades, in Hillsboro, MO.  A bit over an hour from us, but a really nice spot.

Walk On

From a recent walk at Watershed Nature Center, late fall, looking towards winter.  Actually 2 weeks ago, doesn't seem that long ago.  Regardless, we're in that stage of year, most of the leaves are down, more gray skies, cooler temperatures.  Winter will be here soon.

This is actually from the MCT Bike Trail, looking down and across.  I did a little zig-zag this daybetween the bike trail and the trails along the SW side of the area.  Trying to get a bit more time and distance in.
- - -

I'm still doing the Hiker's 365 Challemge, though I've completed the 365 mile distance.  We'll set a full-year benchmark to try and exceed in 2024.  I also started the Winter 100 challenge 11/1/2023, the goal for that is 100 miles over Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb.
- - -

I rather like the more "rustic" trails that meander along the W side of the Watershed.  This is coming down from the (somewhat hidden) Bluff View, down to the trail that mostly parallels the main (Paved) but meets up with the bake trail at the Amphitheater
- - -.

The gravel part of the trail, I believe this is just east of the Observation Tower
- - -

Looks like beavers are around.  They do a lot of damage to these small-ish trees.
- - -

Late sun, not too long before sunset.

On The Charts - November 1973

Continuing the review of songs that were on the Top 40 (US) charts 50 years ago (1973).  We're on to November; the penultimate month of 1973.

All of the 1973 music posts can be seen HERE, btw.

Following the normal format, here's the Top 10 songs for November1973, based on the average chart position (US charts) over the 4 weeks in the month:

    • Keep On Truckin' (Part 1) - Eddie Kendricks - 1.75
    • Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight And The Pips - 2.75
    • Heartbeat It's A Lovebeat - The DeFranco Family - 4.5

There were 55 individual songs on the Top 40 over the course of the 4 weeks in November, which is pretty much average.

18 songs made their Top 40 debut in November, which is pretty typical.  Several are especially notable, a few? not so much. Here they are, with their debut rank:

    • Leave Me Alone (ruby Red Dress) - Helen Reddy - 29
    • Let Me Serenade You - Three Dog Night - 32

    • Friends - Bette Midler - 40

So that's it, look for the post later this month of songs that dropped off the Hot 100 in November without having made the Top 40!

    My Adventure Challenge

I finished my Hiker's 365 Challenge in October.  The goal was to hike 365 miles in the year.  I'll keep logging miles, see how far I can get by the end of the year.  But, I also started a new challenge:  Winter 100.  The goal here is to complete 100 miles of hikes during Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb.  I'm off to a decent start, but the early sunsets are tough.

Here's some photos from a recent hike at Watershed Nature Center:

    Hikers 365 Challenge

I'm sure I've posted about it here, sometime during 2023, but I've officially finished the Hikers 365 Challenge this week.  The goal is to hike 365 miles in a year, with hikes (not just walking around) of at least 1 miles each.  It took me 9+ months, or 41.8 weeks to complete the 365.  I'll keep going, of course, but doubt I'll be able to make my goal of 500 miles in the year. (my pace works out to 466) .

    A couple of interesting tidbits:

    • My average Miles per Hike is only 1.81 miles per hike, but with 201 hikes in 293 days.
    • My longest hikes was a rather modest 5.68 miles
    • I had hikes in 13 different states: IL, VA, NY, LA, ME, MO, NC, WV, OH, KY, PA, IN, MS (Listed in order of most->least miles)
    • 38% of my miles were in/around my neighborhood.  That's a bit disappointing, but means I didn't have to drive to walk
    • Not quite 16% of my walks were on the local bike trails

This has been a really good experience for me, I had fallen into a "work from home, sit in my office, move to the couch" trap.  I was shocked to look at my steps counter last December, and it spurred me to action.  My steps per year is over 2x what it was last year, and I'm feeling better for it.

    GOALS:

    • I'd like to get as close to 500 for the year as possible, but will be satisfied with anything over 450.
    • I'm debating starting some of the other challenges from the same organization, starting with the Winter Challenge (which starts 11/1).
    • I want to do the challenge again in 2024 (perhaps informally), and improve on 2323's performance
    • I really want to get my overall steps (not just hikes) higher.

    Ny suggestions?

    19,144 Songs

Not long ago, I mentioned to somebody that my iPod had over 16,000 songs on it, and asked “Do you even listen to all of them?”

We’ll, I think so, but wasn’t really sure.  So I decided to check (looking at iTunes):

First off. As of 10/13/2023, I have 19,144 songs on the iPod.  That’s a lot more than the 16k I had thought.  That covers all genres of music.

As to if they all get listened to?  Sorting the library by “Last Played”, I determined

    • Almost 1/3 of my library (31.1%) has been played in the past year.
    • Not quite 1/2 (49.7%) has been played in the last 2 years.
    • Over 2/3 (67.9%) in the past 3 years
    • Over 3/4 (76.2%) in the past 4 years
    • Almost 4/5 (79.6%) in the past 5 years.

I figure that’s pretty decent.  There’s a lot of songs that I have more than 1 copy
(like greatest hits albums and album versions).
Or songs that I acquired as part of an anthology collection (but didn’t like).
But it does flag that I should do a little cleanup.

September 2023: Nifty Fifty, Straight Out of Camera Pt.5

On The Charts - October 1973

Continuing the review of songs that were on the Top 40 (US) charts 50 years ago (1973).  We're on to October; starting to wind it down.

All of the 1973 music posts can be seen HERE, btw.

Following the normal format, here's the Top 10 songs for October 1973, based on the average chart position (US charts) over the 4 weeks in the month:

There were 53 individual songs on the Top 40 over the course of the 4 weeks in September, which is pretty much average.

18 songs made their Top 40 debut in October, which is pretty typical.  Several are especially notable, a few?  Not so much. Here they are, with their debut rank:

      • Paper Roses - Marie Osmond - 25
