Fading Light

Sunsets in the midwest are often pretty dramatic.  Wide open skies, reflecting off all sorts of cloud formations.  BUT, if it is a crystal clear sky, on a cold (low humidity) day...  well, not so much.

I still though this was interesting, though not dramatic.

Back To It

Well, not the first time the blog has fallen to the wayside....  sorry once again.  But time to get it back to happening:

Nice walk at Watershed Nature Center yesterday, managed a couple of sunset photos with the phone.  Here's the one I decided to drop to FB and the photo sites:

I was pretty pleased with this one there's a minimal of tweaking, here's the Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) Version for reference below.  Can you tell the difference?

Look Out Cleveland...

Ohio sunset, from my sister-in-law's rooftop patio.  Ohio City, Ohio, just across the Cuyahoga from downtown Cleveland.

New River Gorge Bridge

Long drive yesterday, from Raleigh, NC, to Pittsburgh, PA.  And didn’t get on the road until almost 2 (for good reason, at least).  And didn’t make great time (for not so good reason).

Anyway, we ended up with a little happenstance, as we crossed the New River Gorge Bridge (West Virginia) right as the sun was setting.  A quick stop at the overlook, a couple quick photos w/ the iPhone, and back on the road,

Last Rays

Just a little something from a late afternoon walk at Schon Park.  Intentionally underexposed to emphasize the colors of the setting sun.  Ah, the joys of Manual Mode.

This is Straight from the Camera....

Too Many Sunsets? - Again

Yeah I know...  This one is from a week ago.  Not quite the "classic" sunset, but I rather like this one.  The sun is a little blown-out, but I really wanted to maintain the detail in thr foreground.  I suppose if I was really good I could've done a stacked exposure kind of thing (with multiple images).  Or if I had a graduated ND filter.  But I'm not that fancy.

Taken at Schon park in Glen Carbon.

Title is in reference to yesterday's post.

Too Many Sunsets?

Can you have too many sunset pictures?  Sometimes they're so easy they seem almost cheap.  But they're so sweet!!!

This one is from last evening (Saturday),from a humble location:  the parking lot of the Glen Carbon Wal-Mart.  I managed to get an angle mostly uncluttered, but couldn't quite get it clear.

Last Rays...

I've been pretty busy lately, and haven't been making enough time for photography.  I don't have "the blahs" or anything.  Just busy.  And tired.  Anyway, life seems to be headed back towards a level of normalcy, so that's good.

Anyway, late Saturday afternoon, I decided to run out someplace to see what I could see.  I was headed west on I-270, debating myself between Choteau Island and Columbia Bottom, when I came up on Rt. 3 and made a snap decision to divert to West Alton and the Audubon Center at Riverlands.  I found a few nice photo ops, most of which are still awaiting processing.  This was a pano from my iPhone.  Tweaked and uploaded (to facebook) from the field.

This is looking across Alton Slough...  You can see the towers of the Alton Bridge on the right horizon...  This spot is just about 1 mile South East of the image posted yesterday (which was taken ~20 hours after this one!).

Early Sunset

It has been almost a week since we switched away from daylight savings time, and I'm still adjusting. Just after 4pm and the sun is racing for the horizon... Oh well, 6 weeks and the days will start getting longer.

Sunset, Watershed Nature Center

Beautiful evening at the watershed.  I took a bunch of photos, which will probably dribble out over the next few days. Or perhaps fade into a corner of my hard drive, to never be seen in public.

Here's two that ended up at 365project:  This one and that one.

Moonrise, Clearing Storms

Sometimes it pays to look back.  This photo was taken as the sun was setting, but looking East, not West.  It had rained most of the day, with some pretty strong storms.  As the day wound down, the skies were clearing.  The tail end of the storm clouds was being illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun, and a nearly full moon was rising above.

I really liked the smooth transitions from dark to light orange, then light to darker blue.  Contrasted with the clear and crisp moon…

Full disclosure, this was taken 7-8 weeks ago, just after the Winter solstice (and just before Christmas).  But it was unseasonable warm, with a high of 64 degrees.  Originally posted at 365project.

Sunset On Snowy Fields

Just a little something from over the weekend.  A companion to Saturday's post on 365project.  On the outskirts of Auburn, IL (population 4,445).   We were taking the back road (Rt. 4) back from a quick trip to Springfield IL...

Time Lapse Sunset, Looking South-East
