Aren't Wheels Supposed To Be Round?

Obviously, it's a rhetorical question.  And the wheel above was round, until about 10:15 am yesterday when the tire catastrophically failed.  This was on a trailer hauling the gear for 14 boy scouts headed for summer camp.  The tire failed about 45 minutes from home, while driving 65 (ish) oin the left lane of the interstate.

Notice that the tire tore up the fender pretty well.  In true "Be Prepared" scout fashion, we did NOT have a spare.  So the scoutmaster called his wife to throw some spaers in their picku-up truck, we disconnected the van, and took the 3-cars worth of scouts to the next exit to hang out.  A couple of hours later, we were back on the road.

And 15 miles later, we were back in the shoulder, with the other tire failed:

So we repeated the above proceedure, including having to cut / manhandle the fender off....  We did eventually make it to the camp site.  We dumped the scouts we were carrying, and headed home.
