Lost World...

On our recent vacation, my (6 year old) son was reviewing the brochures at one of our hotels, and found one for Lost World Caverns in Lewisburg, WV. Well, it wasn’t fall off our path, so we decided to check it our. And a fun place it was!

Basically a big old cave, largely in it’s natural state, except for lights and walkways, of course! This is looking back through the cavern towards the beginning of the loop .

So they have this self-guided tour, it took 45 minutes or so, wandering around this cavern. The boy was pretty impressed, and I enjoyed it a lot, in a laid back kind of way. LWC was much less “tourist-y” than Merimec Caverns out here in the Midwest, which I went to a decade or so ago…..

This piece is called “Bridal Veil”, I guess because it is white and glittery…!

A B&W, just trying to capture the lines and shapes. The lighting was a real trick, leading to REALLY slow shutter speeds, as slow as 1/8th second. I did a lot of bracing on the various hand-rails, and think these turned out OK .

The deepest, back corner, where prehistoric bears supposedly lived. So, if you're even near Lewisburg, check it out!

i was there when i was in grade school. the images still stay with me. there was a part of the tour where they turned off the lights for a moment. i have never been in such darkness!

Way cool!! 3

I'm not sure my kids would've liked the lights out. I spent may hours in my basement photographic darkroom in my youth, where you test it by sitting in the dark for 15 minutes or so. if you can see ANYTHING, you need to find the light-leak.

i can promise you, no one could adjust to that kind of dark. i couldn't see myself, my hand in front of my face, nothing. i remember the tour guide telling us to hold onto this thin railing that was there. i understood why after the lights went out!
if they don't do the lights out part of the tour anymore, it's probably due to the fear of lawsuits. sad, it was memorable. i was only in grade school and i still can recall those few moments.
